Approximately two weeks ago, right here on Softpedia you were able to read details about software updates for the Microsoft Zune digital medial player. We said then that the first software update for Zune was scheduled for availability before Christmas. And Microsoft delivered on that. The Redmond Company had released the first firmware update for Zune.

Microsoft has failed to reveal details about the aspects updated with the Zune 1.2 Firmware release. But, as the company initially announced, the update did not introduce new capabilities. "This required update will help enhance stability and performance," describes the software installer, you can see a screenshot in the adjacent image. "It is plumbing stuff, but it is stuff customers will notice and appreciate," had declared Jason Reindorp, marketing director for Zune at Microsoft two weeks ago.

While the Zune firmware has been updated from version 1.1 build to version 1.2, the most evident enhancements are in speed and responsiveness. With Zune firmware 1.2 menu navigation has improved to the point were there is barely any lag left. Scrolling through music albums or browsing and viewing pictures have also experienced speed boosts.

In order to update your Zune firmware you have to plug in the device. When you right click on it you will be able to choose the "Check for Zune Device Updates." The rest of the process is automated. There have been reports of difficulties when downloading, but on a limited basis.
