The First Stable Release of TinyMe Was Launched

- TinyMe 2008.0 - a fast and light operating system

By: Daniel Voicu, Linux Editor

TinyMe, a PCLinuxOS-based Linux distribution, has reached its first stable release, 2008.0. TinyMe was created for older computers and for those of you who need a fast and lightweight
desktop.

TinyMe's ISO is 200 MB large, but don't be fooled by its small dimensions! It comes with all the tools you might want and need for everyday use. When you have to write a document, you can use AbiWord; for web browsing there's Opera, and Audacious will let you enjoy your favorite music. The easy to use Control Centers will let you configure and customize your entire system just the way you like it. Other applications, like Asunder (a CD Ripper that can also do CDDB lookups), GThumb Photo Viewer and Digital Camera application, Sylpheed E-Mail client, ePDFView (a PDF viewer) are also included. You can also play the small games offered by TinyMe.

There are some important changes from the previous version, Test 7, to 2008.0 Final:

• The session manager that's now used is Openbox-session instead of Gnome-Session.
• The core system utilities like ALSA, PCLinuxOS Control Center, mklivecd, HAL and hwdetect were updated.
• LXAppearance took the place of gtk-chtheme and some new wallpapers were added.
• Most of the applications were updated to a more recent version, such as Abiword, Conky, gFTP, GNOME-PPP, gpicview, Murrine GTK theme engine, VIT, TinyCC and many others.

TinyMe's desktop environment is made up of Openbox for the window manager, LXPanel for the panel, Nitrogen to set the wallpaper and iDesk for showing the icons on your desktop (this is used because Openbox is a desktop environment that doesn't natively support icons on the desktop).
