MWC 2008: The First Sony Ericsson Windows Mobile-powered Phone - XPERIA X1

- This is just the first device of the XPERIA series

By: Cosmin Vasile, Communications News Editor

Sony Ericsson announced its first Windows Mobile-based device at the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona, Spain. The new SE's lineup debuted at the ex-3GSM has been called XPERIA
and the first device of the series is XPERIA X1.

Already one of the best manufacturers of Symbian UIQ-powered handsets, Sony Ericsson decided to give Microsoft a chance and satisfy the needs of its fans by improving the converged mobile experience.

The XPERIATM X1 combines a 3-inch clear wide VGA display and a full QWERTY keyboard within a quality metal-finish body. With Windows Mobile inside, the XPERIA X1 lets users choose from a dynamic range of activities, anytime and anywhere.

"XPERIA represents the first brand that is truly borne from within Sony Ericsson. It represents our vision for a premium, energised communication experience," said Dee Dutta, Head of Marketing, Sony Ericsson. "This launch, and the announcement of the X1, further strengthens the overall Sony Ericsson brand and places us at the forefront of mobile convergence."

Sony Ericsson XPERIATM X1 design is a mix of Motorola's RIZR Z8 unique arc slider form of the internal keypad and Nokia's Prism weird keys. The result is a wide pitched easy-to-use full QWERTY keyboard. Users will be able to enjoy multimedia entertainment on a bright wide touchscreen VGA display (800 x 480 pixels resolution), while XPERIA panels can be arranged as they want for easy access.

Featuring Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional capabilities, the highest data transfer rate (HSDPA/HSUPA) and WiFi support, users will be able to enjoy their favorite entertainment and work efficiently on the move. Other features of the device include built-in GPS receiver with A-GPS function for a faster location, microSD slot card, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP support, FM radio with RDS, MP3/AAC/MPEG4 player, Motion sensor (with UI auto-rotate), TrackID music recognition service and an excellent 3.15 Megapixel camera.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 will be available in selected markets from the second half of 2008 at a price that will be disclosed later on.
