Hitachi, an important hard disk drive (HDD) maker, said that it will soon roll out its latest development, a revolution in the technology world - a 1TB hard disk drive which will feature a 3.5" size and it will be included in several PCs.
"Desktop hard drives holding 1 terabyte, or 1,000 gigabytes, of storage will likely be announced in 2006," said Bill Healy, senior vice president of product strategy and marketing at Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, reports Cnet News.com cited by X-bit Labs.
This would be the world's first 1TB HDD which is to be retailed worldwide. Unfortunately, the manufacturer didn't reveal the exact release date for its device.
At the end of June, Showa Denko, a Japan-based major supplier of hard disk media, also announced that it will initiate the mass production of 2.5" hard drive platters with a capacity of 100 GB (each), in the third quarter of 2006.
It was said that a special developed technology will be used - the perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) - in order to obtain a density of 178 GB/square inch for each of the 2, 5" platters, which will be adopted in the development process of 200 GB hard drives.
Showa Denko's clients are leaders of several market segments such as hard drive manufacturers - Toshiba and Western Digital - but also Seagate and Hitachi GST.
