According to the dropping sales registered lately in the schools where soft drinks are sold, a US soft drinks industry group appreciated the rationality of the children that turn to healthier options.
The companies that sell
full-sugar cans of soda are being threatened to lose the customers. They are also blamed for being a source of
the obesity cases at children.
The industry also faces charges that they turn to scholars for higher sales percent, but The American Beverage Association (ABA) denies them. ABA has made a report that demonstrated that the consumers have a large number of drinks to choose from.
The report from Wednesday included information from large soft drinks companies like PepsiCo and Coca-Cola. They showed that the sales for non-diet soft drinks, in schools, dropped by a quarter between the years 2002-2004.
On the other hand, the demand for healthier drinks gained percents in the last period of time. The sports drinks increased with 70%, bottled water rose by 23%, diet drinks gained 22% and fruit juice sales jumped by 15%.
The report also attested the fact that school students buy a week one can of full-sugar soft drinks. A professor at the New York University, Marion Mestle, said about this to the Associated Press news agency: "It's substituting one bad product for another".
In
Britain, Mark Sexton, the deputy teacher at St. Ilan School, started to take action against Coca Cola, after noticing the high number of students who would drink it all day long. He says "I'd say the pupils were drinking, on average, about three cans a day". Therefore, a law was released that bans the sales of fizzy drinks in school.
