Both singers dated Mayer, but they don't see eye to eye on his character

The claws are out between Taylor Swift and Katy Perry, two heavyweights of the pop industry at the moment, and it's all because Taylor revealed some unflattering details about Perry in a Rolling Stone interview, describing how the other singer was a backstabber. Of course, no names were given.

Perry didn't take long to respond, taking to Twitter to blast her opponent as a “fake.” She too chose to leave out any names from her accusation, making the situation similar to a Cold War between divas.

Taylor hates John Mayer, Perry loved John, now Perry hates Taylor

Today, Page Six claims that the feud started over singer John Mayer, the heartthrob who actually used to date both Taylor and Katy at different moments. But whereas Taylor was left with a bitter taste in her mouth after their short romance, Katy chose to end things on a more friendly note.

The conflict was made worse by the fact that Katy was still dating the guy when Taylor wrote a scathing song dedicated to him, called “Dear John.” In her typical fashion, she blasted her former lover, saying things like “Don't you think 19's too young to be played by your dark twisted games.”

Katy Perry has been trying to sabotage Taylor ever since she bad-mouthed John

Insiders revealed that the song really humiliated John back in 2012, so it's possible he complained about it to Katy. She then took his side and began publicly blasting Swift for her music. Of course, it was all cloak-and-dagger stuff, mostly implied, because you can't afford to diss someone famous in public anymore unless you're a politician.

Sources from the industry claim that Perry began “making digs at Taylor from then on.”

This might explain why, later on, Perry did the unimaginable by “stealing” some of Taylor’s backup dancers and concert staff away from her while she was on tour, making things very difficult for her because she was left to find replacements on the run.

Taylor said in her Rolling Stone interview: “Oh, we’re just straight-up enemies. And it wasn’t even about a guy! It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me . . . I don’t think there would be any personal problem if she weren’t competitive.”

The celebrity feud just went public

This entire scenario is only said to have played out because, by this point, Perry had it out for Swift. Of course, since then, she’s moved on from John Mayer by unceremoniously and secretly dumping him soon after Valentine's Day this year. The exact reason for the split remains a mystery.

So Taylor can say all she wants that this is not about a man, but if she hadn't put down Mayer with her song, Perry would have never picked on her and tried to sabotage her tour. Since the war has just started as an open media battle, expect more blows in the future.
