The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) warns that cybercriminals continue to send out scam emails in which they use the names of FBI officials. There’s a large variety of scams, but typically they all notify recipients that they can win large amounts of money.

419 scams in which the fraudsters use the name of the law enforcement agency have been around for quite some time. However, the IC3 says it still gets complaints from users who receive such notifications.

The latest round of emails being sent out by scammers leverages the name of the new FBI Director, James B. Comey.

“Neither government agencies nor government officials send unsolicited e-mail to members of the public. United States government agencies use the legal process to contact individuals,” the IC3 warns.

“The public should not respond to any unsolicited e-mails or click on embedded links in these messages because they may contain viruses or malicious software.”
