The Evil Within creator and famous games designer Shinji Mikami has talked about the horror elements from the new game and revealed that the title will scare players by avoiding established tropes and clichés, as most people have gotten used to them by now.

Shinji Mikami is mostly known for creating the Resident Evil series and masterminding some of the most important iterations in Capcom's franchise.

Now, he is heading up his own team at Tango Gameworks and has partnered with Bethesda for The Evil Within, a new horror game that is set to debut in 2014.

While talking with Edge, Mikami has discussed about horror elements in gaming and how they need to be subverted in order to achieve innovation.

"Not much has changed when it comes to instilling terror in the player," Mikami added. "But people have got used to the tropes of horror and they know what’s coming next, so in that sense it is harder to make them afraid."

MIkami has also revealed that things are progressing quite smoothly nowadays, as most of the hard work has already been completed by his team.

"It’s still difficult to manage a team, but things are coming together now that the game is in a playable state. So, compared with a couple of years ago, it’s easier. Making games is always like a rollercoaster: really fun times, but also really busy times. When you ride a rollercoaster, the uphill part is scary and fraught and lasts for a long time, and the downhill part – the fun, exhilarating part – is over in a flash," he added.

Mikami has also noted that the partnership with Bethesda is a very simple one and he hadn’t been pressured into doing anything he doesn't approve while working on The Evil Within.

"We still feel a strong spirit of independences. Bethesda respects creative people and creative freedom, so in that sense it is an ideal group to be a part of. And if we want to learn technical knowhow from another studio, they are all very open."

The Evil Within is set to debut in 2014 for PC, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, and Xbox One.
