The opening sequences of The Evil Within, as well as the first five chapters of the game's campaign, have just received some fresh details, confirming just what players will go through when they first start experiencing the new survival horror title from Tango Gameworks and Bethesda.

The Evil Within promises to deliver a bold experience later this year, as it arrives from the mind of famous Japanese game designer Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil, as well as from his experienced team at Tango Gameworks. The title will be published by Bethesda when it's ready to come out.

Until then, a special preview of the game has just run in the latest GameInformer magazine, via NeoGAF, confirming just what players are going to go through in the first five chapters (out of a total of 16) of the survival horror experience.

The introduction is atmospheric

The opening sequences see protagonist Sebastian, a police detective tasked with investigating an eerie murder, near an abandoned hospital. This first chapter is pretty linear, as the hero chases down a mysterious individual inside the building, ultimately reaching a mirror that takes him into an alternate reality.

The second chapter sees Sebastian enter a lakeside area that can be explored freely. Backstory can be found in the form of letters written by other people. The mirror once again takes Sebastian to another place, this time a morgue, from which he must escape by finding keys that are hidden in different spots.

The first enemies are introduced at the end of chapter 2 and players quickly learn that they're not zombies, which can be easily disposed of by shots in the head. The monsters are pretty resilient and players will have to use their brains to uncover ways of defeating them.

Chapter 3 takes Sebastian to a farm town where he can explore quite a few homes and learn new things about the world. The enemies use melee weapons and even rifles or shotguns, in some cases.

The Artificial Intelligence is praised by the article, as the game's enemies prove to be quite smart and difficult to defeat. Fortunately, there are plenty of checkpoints that can help when things get tricky.

The first boss fight

The first big monster encountered by Sebastian is in this third chapter, in the form of a huge creature that wields a monster and chases players through the town and its homes. This is where players can choose how to defeat it, as they can employ fire arms, but also traps or even stealth strikes that deal massive damage.

Chapters 4 and 5 deal more with puzzles, just like a psychological thriller, but also feature more supernatural elements, such as black holes.

The last chapter sees players team up with an AI-controlled ally who, just like the enemies, is quite capable of surviving and holding its own, without being invincible. Players only need to help them in case they get hurt and require healing.

Overall, The Evil Within looks pretty interesting, so expect to hear more about it as we get closer to its release next month for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
