The Email Battles: Gmail vs Yahoo! Mail

The two will most likely be in the same weight category by 2010

The Goliath when it comes to email of the two is most definitely Yahoo!, with Google's service playing the part of David. Or in other words, Yahoo! momentarily wipes the floor with Google, because it has been in the free email business ever since the beginning of the Internet as
we know it. Popularity is no a small thing to be having, so Yahoo is doing its best to keep its own intact and perhaps even raise it, little by little.

Indeed it does that, comScore.com's numbers on the matter indicate that the service provided by the Sunnyvale based company has risen by 3.12 percent the past year, but that is absolutely nothing compared to the figures that show in Google's part of the chart: a whooping rise of 53.60 percent. Of course, that doesn't mean very much when you're a service that has few users (not that it is Gmail's case per se, but its numbers are about twice or more lower than Yahoo!'s).

Taking into consideration a constant raise of at least the same number of users, Gmail will probably catch up with Yahoo by November 2010 and from there on end… it's not so clear of a future to be predicting. If Yahoo keeps rising and Google turns into the legitimate close runner up, I wonder where will the users be gathering and turn up from. It's either people will use both email providers, or one will lose in favor of the other and it's not a wild guess to find out who that will be.

If Google is able to pull this off, it will dominate the Internet in every possible way, sliding down the monopolistic path that so far hasn't proven to be the right one. Of course, if OpenSocial turns out to be a success, that is.

In my own personal experience, though talking on numerous forums I see it is shared by MANY others, I have been a long time Yahho email user and was quite satisfied. However, in recent months, Yahoo has had ongoing, repeated problems. Currently, for weeks now (yes, I said WEEKS!) I have been unable to perform seaches in my email that will show any emails dated prior to June 30, 2008. After repeated contacts with Yahoo and HOURS wasted talking with them, still ZERO results. They continually give the same, lame line..."we are working on it, ot will be resolved shortly". Refuse to give even an estimated time table for its resolution. Frankly, their reps have out & out lied at times. So, I find myself like many others now using my Gmail account much more regularly and have discovered all I have been missing! Gmail is sooo much user friendly, more features...and fast! So I am going to move all my email over to my Gmail account ASAP and discontinue my Yahoo altogether. With the combination of Yahoo's dismissive attitude toward their problems and their customers, along with Gmail's much better platform I am sure we will see the migration from Yahoo to Gmail by the millions.

with gmail you cannot sort your mail by date/sender/subject, etc.
tools to forward/delete and more, require you to scroll window up or down. yahoo mail is resembles outlook but without the need to store
messages on your HD.
i would have switched from gmail to yahoo instantly but the hassle of address change is holding me from doing it....

I have faced the same problem during critical times. And that experience sucks. I have no way to check my emails, though they offered 'unlimited' storage to store them, it is pointless when you can even retrieve/search them easily.

The only 'up' for Yahoo! is the 'unlimited' inbox size. Other than that, it is easy to adapt to Gmail's style.

I am okay and supporting all good emails services, and I hope they all gets better and we can have an easier life day by day, cheers!

Yahoo mail beta is too cool to pass. It beats gmail anyday. I used to use gmail a lot before they made beta. But Google beats Yahoo hands down as a search engine and a toolbar.

The gmail interface along with little features that are easily accessible on almost any computer and mobile device make it very easy for users to access it. And because Gmail is very new compared to Yahoo! Mail, it's not having much in it's favor yet most people around me have switched over to Gmail and so have I.

I used yahoo for years, since 1995. In 2008 I decided to switch to gmail due to the fact that they allow POP access for Free. Yahoo charges for POP access. What this means is that I can pull my gmail into my Microsoft Outlook Application, as well as my SmartPhone Blackjack. To have this access with Yahoo I would have had to pay an annual fee, which I'm not willing to do.

No plans to return to Yahoo anytime soon....

I have spend 2 days trying to move (import, export) my AOL contacts book into G mail in preparation of using GMAIL. Always sez list includes (INVALID addresses) I am blind from trying to spot them. Many on the internet report the same problem. I just imported it in a flash on Yahoo. Someone suggested exporting it from Yahoo to GMAIL.

That's next

I find Gmail great- Its easy, fun and simple to use! I have had it for seven years now, and still have not regreted it. I tried Yahoo Mail for two weeks but found it difficult and complicated. Their designs and graphics are no that good either, compared to Gmail.
