The Elder Scrolls might be one of the biggest franchises in the world of gaming but, despite its importance and clear story elements, the team at ZeniMax Online working on the online spin-offs has had freedom to play with the core features.

Matt Firor, who is the game director working on the MMO at ZeniMax Online, talked to Edge about the game.

“The IP’s fantastic, fantasy MMOGs are always a little more successful than others and I think there’s a reason for that, and they knew they wanted to do that. Other than that, it was a blank slate. I proposed the three alliances, the fight over the imperial city, and the setting 1000 years in the past. That got traction, and we went from there,” he said.

The Elder Scrolls Online will be centered around a plot to take over all of Tamriel, using undead armies created by the Imperial faction and Molag Bol.

The game will be launched in 2013.
