Bethesda and Zenimax Online Studios have announced The Elder Scrolls Online, a massively multiplayer online role playing game set in the extremely popular fantasy universe.

Bethesda impressed lots of RPG fans with The Elder Scroll V: Skyrim last year but, ever since its release, many players expressed their desire to experience the complex title with their friends.

Earlier this year, a rumor appeared that said Bethesda was close to unveiling an Elder Scrolls MMO.

Now, the publisher, thanks to the Zenimax Online Studios team, has presented The Elder Scrolls Online, a multiplayer-only experience that's going to debut in 2013 for the PC and Mac platforms.

The first details about the game have been revealed by Game Informer magazine, which will run an in-depth article about the new online game in this month's issue.

"It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years," game director Matt Firor said. "The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise."

According to the magazine, The Elder Scrolls Online will merge the classic exploration mechanic seen in single-player games in the series, with the scale and social aspects of current MMORPGs.

In terms of the lore, the game is set a millennium before the events of Skyrim, as the daedric prince Molag Bal wants to pull all of Tamriel into his demonic realm.

The game will feature all sorts of things, from solo quests to public dungeons, as well as a Player-versus-Player mechanic in which people can enlist in one of three factions that wage war over the province of Cyrodiil and the throne of the Emperor.

Expect to hear more details about The Elder Scrolls Online soon, with a teaser trailer and the first screenshot being set to appear tomorrow.
