The Elder Scrolls Online is dropping its subscription model this year, as Bethesda and Zenimax Online Studios confirm that players will just have to buy the game, now dubbed The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited, and experience it without any sort of restrictions. However, a premium membership will still be available with special benefits.

The Elder Scrolls Online launched last year, and despite an aggressive marketing campaign, the actual game ended up not impressing that many people, as quite a lot of players opted to no longer maintain the mandatory subscription to the role-playing game.

Goodbye, mandatory subscription

After subsequent delays for the console versions, as well as quite a lot of updates for the PC and Mac editions, Bethesda and Zenimax Online Studios now confirm that the mandatory subscription will no longer exist starting March on PC.

More specifically, on March 17 for PC and Mac, the game turns into The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited, a new version of the experience that no longer requires a monthly fee to play. The game also receives a global June 9 release date for the PS4 and Xbox One consoles, where the same experience will be available.

As such, those who didn't pick up the title will just have to buy it as a regular game and then experience it free of any monthly subscriptions.

An optional membership called ESO Plus is available

The game will, however, have an optional premium membership that comes with various advantages such as bonuses, a number of crowns that are the in-game currency, and access to DLC packs that will be available for a fee to regular players.

"Our fans are our biggest inspiration, and we’ve listened to their feedback on the entertainment experience they want," Game Director Matt Firor says. "We know that Elder Scrolls fans want choice when it comes to how they play and how they pay, and that is what they will get. We have made numerous changes to the game over the past year, and are confident this is a game that Elder Scrolls fans will love to play."

In celebration of the new announcement, a massive cinematic trailer has just been revealed; it is called the Confrontation and you can admire it below. For more details about the whole move, you can check out the official FAQ.
