The MMO is making the move to free-to-play

The developers at ZeniMax Online and publisher Bethesda might be currently focused on the transition that The Elder Scrolls Online will make from subscription to free-to-play, but the companies are also making changes to the mechanics of the MMO, and in Update 6, one of the core new additions will be the changes to how justice works.

When the game is updated, thieves will find the various simulated locations of Tamriel much more open to stealth approaches and careful appropriation of another creature’s valuables.

The official announcement states, “NPCs have personal inventories and own items found in the world, such as the contents of their homes. If you target an item owned by someone, a red prompt will appear to let you know that picking up that item will be considered a crime. If no one sees you take it, though, it’s all yours with no one the wiser!”

Taking items directly from a character will be much harder and will require a stealthy character.

Gamers can also try to attack and kill NPCs in The Elder Scrolls Online, but the consequence and the reactions of others are direr than when it comes to stealing.

The Elder Scrolls Online will also have a new skill line

The developers are also saying that the new criminal activities will be tracked using a new skill line called Legerdemain, available in the world category, which comes complete with a number of abilities that allow characters to excel when it comes to unlawful activities.

Of course, criminals cannot always get away unseen, and that means gamers can get bounties and guards will try to take them down on sight, regardless of where they are in The Elder Scrolls Online.

There are three levels – disreputable, notorious and fugitive – and gamers who are aiming to reduce their rank will need to wait before committing more criminal acts or they can find a fence in order to sell their loot.

Update 6 for The Elder Scrolls Online does not yet have an official launch date.

The MMO is at the moment abandoning subscriptions for new players and allowing them to explore Tamriel and some interesting mechanics for free.

The title will also be launched on the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 on June 9.
