The trailer for James Gandolfini’s final movie, “The Drop,” has been released. Initially called “Animal Rescue,” the film also stars Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace and is directed by Michael R. Roskam of the “Bullethead” fame.

As you can see in the first preview made available below, “The Drop” is a gritty crime drama, in which Gandolfini and Hardy play two businessmen with ties to the underworld, who run a bar that acts as a “money drop” for the gangsters in Brooklyn.

Just when they seem to have the operation running smoothly, a robbery takes place. It is then that “Bob [Hardy] finds himself at the center of a robbery gone awry and entwined in an investigation that digs deep into the neighborhood’s past where friends, families, and foes all work together to make a living – no matter the cost,” as the synopsis says.

The script is from Dennis Lehane, whose previous critical hits include “Mystic River” and “Gone Baby Gone.” You can tell from the trailer that you can expect “The Drop” to have a similar feel and depth as these two, with an extra side of Hardy, an adorably puppy, and, of course, the melancholy that must come when you think this was the last film Gandolfini made before he died.

“The Drop” will be out in theaters in the US in September. I don’t expect it to be a resounding hit at the box office (few of Hardy’s movies are, with a few exceptions) and to make a fortune, but it will certainly fare well with loyal fans and the critics. So I for one am hyped about the release. How about you?
