The Doors Rock for Their 40th Anniversary

Three simultaneous events to celebrate the most influential rock band in history

Wednesday marked the 40th anniversary for The Doors and all three remaining members joined forces with other big names in the music industry to recreate some of the band's greatest hits. Sure, nothing was like it used to be in yore times and Jim Morrison's absence was not the only factor that contributed to that.

First of all, the band members were no longer carefree rockers who struggled to combine poetry, music and drugs together, but washed-out 60-year-olds who, nevertheless, proved that the flame of love for the concept that stood behind the founding of The Doors still burns strong. Then, it was the obvious feud that is still going on among them that made it impossible for all three to get up on the stage and perform.

Guitarist Robby Krieger, keyboardist Ray Manzarek and drummer John Densmore had a very serious falling apart a long time ago, when the first two mates wanted to create another band to go under the name of The Doors. Densmore strongly opposed their decision and legally prohibited them from ever making any profit off their collaboration with the band and/or with Jim Morrison.

However, all three were at the Whisky a Go-Go in Hollywood (where the band first boldly launched itself into the world of music), where Perry Farrell, Slash and Linkin Park frontman Chester Benington rocked the stage in a way that, says Manzarek, 'would have made Jim proud'. They played, with the original guitarist and keyboardist of the band, hits like 'L.A Woman', 'Light My Fire', 'Roadhouse Blues' and 'People Are Strange'.

Another similar event took place at the same time at the bookstore Book Soup, where Morrison's poetry was read to a crowd of fans. Afterwards, all remaining three members signed copies of the newly released coffee-table book 'The Doors By The Doors', for which Benington and Farrell wrote forewords.

The only person that was missing and was unaccounted for at the grand celebration was actor Val Kilmer, who played the part of Morrison in Oliver Stone's movie 'The Doors'. Manzarek said that Kilmer had attended all rehearsals for the big night but failed to show at the gig as he was being 'probably stuck in traffic or something'.
