A superior device compared to regular WiFi sniffers

You're in town and you have your Wi-Fi enabled laptop with you. You known there's a hotspot around, but you don't know exactly where and you desperately need the connection. You can't walk around with the laptop turned on searching for the network. Even if you could do that, it's likely you'd run out of battery.

This is where Wi-Fi detectors come to the rescue. Unfortunately, typical units will only indicate when a signal is detected and will show you the signal strength. However, there's a more special detector out there, which might give you an edge over other Wi-Fi searching individuals.

Available at ThinkGeek, the Digital WiFi detector will provide more detailed information that will surely save you the trouble of trying to connect to networks you don't have access to or which are insecure.

The Backlight LCD screen fitted on the Digital WiFi detector will show you signal strength, network ID (SSID), encryption status and channel and will provide information about each network when multiple networks are present. All you have to do is scroll down and choose what network best suits your needs.

Additionally, the device measuring 65mm x 70mm x 24mm will also detect the encryption type (WEP and WPA), so it will be up to you whether you want to connect to an insecure network. It's worth noting that the coverage of the Digital WiFi detector is up to 200 feet (60m) in the open environment.

Since it's only compatible with the 802.11b and 802.11g standards, this useful gizmo will not detect the newer 802.11n networks, so don't smash it to the ground when other people in the park are browsing the Internet and you cannot find the network.

The Digital WiFi detector is powered by 2 AAA batteries and can be purchased for about $70.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is .
