Not the game, the dual-band router that just got an early preview

Aiming (or not) to build on the hype of a certain name, ASUS brought out, or will bring out at some point, a wireless router whose full moniker is RT-N66U Dual-Band Router.

Consumer routers might not have been overly newsworthy until about a year ago, but with wireless connections getting so widespread, this is no longer the case.

That said, ASUS is making the news, this once, for preparing something of the sort, the RT-N66U Dark Knight Dual-Band Router to be more precise.

The folks over at VR-Zone were able to get their hands on a model, so they provided anyone and everyone with a preview.

The dual-band connectivity is made possible thanks to the three RP-SMA dual-band antennae on the back, which is removable.

The insides consist of a red PCB (printed circuit board), Broadcom radio, 32MB of flash memory, 256 MB of RAM and a MicroSD card socket for expansion.

The above is only what the report can speculate and relay from its sources, however, as the actual specs won't be published until the item gets released.

What can be detected beyond doubt is what is visible on the outside, namely four Gigabit LAN ports, one Gigabit WAN port, a DC input jack, two USB connectors and the obligatory DC input jack. A WPS button exists as well.

Furthermore, the router supports IPv6 protocol and has a VPS server, which allows one to access the router's storage media from anywhere with an Internet connection.

Finally, the RT-N66U Dark Knight is capable of 6-to-4 and 6-in-4 tunnelling.

The preview says that ASUS has, so far, not provided any release date for the router, nor a price point.

What it did say was that ASUS would launch it alongside the USB-N53 dual-band USB dongle, which features 2x2 MIMO antennas, leading to speeds of up to 300 Mbps. It uses Ralink chipsets for the RF, baseband and MAC.
