During a special event in New York yesterday, Apple’s Vice President of Internet services, Eddy Cue and News Corp.’s CEO, Rupert Murdoch introduced “The Daily,” the first digital newspaper for the iPad.

“Introducing The Daily – the first digital news publication with original content created every day exclusively for the iPad,” reads the app’s official iTunes description.

“Built from scratch by a team of top journalists and designers, The Daily covers the world: breaking news, sports, pop culture, entertainment, apps, games, technology, opinion, celebrity gossip and more,” according to The Daily Holdings, Inc.

The paper is reportedly built by some of the best in the business to bring customers a package that’s smart, attractive, and entertaining.

It takes full advantage of the iPad’s storytelling and sharing capabilities to make stories, photos, video, audio and graphics come alive the more the user touches, swipes, or taps on the tablet’s screen.

The paper publishes 365 days a year and is absolutely free for two weeks from the time iPad owners download the app.

After this ‘trial’ period, customers can opt for one of two subscription plans -  $0.99 a week or $39.99 a year.

The folks behind The Daily also confirmed that the electronic publication would be offered on additional tablets over the coming months.

While The Daily lives on the iPad, a web-friendly version is also available, albeit featuring less stories.

“New times demand new journalism,” said Rupert Murdoch, chairman and chief executive officer of News Corporation. “So we built The Daily completely from scratch -- on the most innovative device to come about in my time -- the iPad."

“The magic of great newspapers -- and great blogs -- lies in their serendipity and surprise, and the touch of a good editor,” continued Mr. Murdoch.

“We’re going to bring that magic to The Daily -- to inform people, to make them think, to help them engage in the great issues of the day. And as we continue to improve and evolve, we are going to use the best in new technology to push the boundaries of reporting.”
