No matter where you go these days, restaurants, parks, metros are all filled with people paying exclusive attention to their smartphone. They usually text, play a game or watch a video and seem so particularly taken that you can’t even seem to imagine a world without these smart companions, where people would actually look at each other.

That’s why, the folks behind the new Light Phone initiative are trying to help you get rid of this pattern and shift your focus towards what truly matters in life.

The Light Phone is a device the size of a credit card that comes with the most basic functionalities: it will allow users to make and receive phone calls. That’s it. Not even good old texting is supported on this phone.

The idea is not to riddle the phone with unnecessary features meant to distract us from reality, and basically, from our lives.

The Light Phone aims to simplify things

The gizmo was created by Joe Jollier and Kaiwei Tang and it is designed to work together with an existing handset (via an app) by forwarding calls to it. On the other hand, the Light Phone is also an unlocked pre-paid cellphone, so if the main smartphone dies, the minimalist handset can pick up the functions. It can offer as much as 500 minutes of talk time.

The inventors of the Light Phone also note that the device might be perfect as a child-friendly phone, because it doesn't came cluttered with apps and social media. It’s clean, in addition to being efficient, safe and easy-to-use by any youngster.

The device has a dot matrix LED display that shows the hour, plus the dialer pad. It will even light up if you’re in a dark environment, so you’ll be able to use it even if lightning conditions aren't all that great.

Apart from that, the phone features a SIM card slot (pre-loaded), Volume controller and a micro USB port.

If the Light Phone seems an interesting idea for you, you should know that the designers are asking you to pledge $100 / €78 in order to reserve your item on Kickstarter. The project is still gathering funds, so it will be some time before the device starts shipping to consumers.
