The Complexity of the PlayStation 3 Forced Changes in God of War 3

Sony has always maintained that the PlayStation 3 is a more powerful gaming console than the Microsoft manufactured Xbox 360. But until now, no game has been able to translate that copious amount of power into much improved graphics or into massively changed gameplay.

Still, Sony has great hopes that the PlayStation 3 videogame line up for 2009, with titles like Killzone 2, God of War 3 and Final Fantasy XIII, will allow players to benefit from the whole power of the console.

Stig Asmussen, who is the director of God of War 3, is even saying that he had to re-design parts of his game because of the complexity of the PS3. And no, that's in no way bad publicity, especially when paired up with Kaz Hirai’s declarations related to the power of the console and the difficulty of programming for it.

Asmussen told CVG that “From my perspective he is essentially saying that Sony made the conscious decision to make the PS3 as powerful as possible, and if that meant it was going to be a beast to program for, 'so be it'. In my opinion, Sony has always been about pushing the industry forward - evolving it. In order to harness new technology fully, it might be necessary to evolve our development techniques as well.”

Apparently, Sony is pushing the whole videogame industry forward with the ever increasing power and complexity of its consoles. Initially, programmers talked about how the PlayStation 2 was difficult to create for and the console managed to become a big success at retail, still moving devices today.

Now, the same is being said about its successor but what seems like complicated now might become standard in a few years, especially if programmers like those on the God of War 3 team manage to understand the technology.
