'The Cloud' in Seoul, Inspired by the Flaming World Trade Center Towers

A new project that will be completed in Seoul by 2015 seems to have drawn for inspiration on one of the most unfortunate tragedies in modern history: the collapse of the World Trade Center Twin Towers in NYC on September 11, 2001.

Called “The Cloud” and designed by architecture firm MVRDV as part of the larger project Yongsan Dream Hub, who lists Daniel Libeskind as lead designer (he's also the master plan architect at Ground Zero), the project is of twin towers joined at some of the upper levels.

Seen from the distance, the new towers seem to bear a very striking resemblance to those that came crashing down in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks – more precisely, with the moment the second plane crashed into them, right before they collapsed, as the Los Angeles Times also points out.

It's as if MVRDV went to great pains to replicate the moment the plane exploded, creating the ball of fire from the explosion by building additional flats that go around one tower and join it to the other, as the photo attached will also show.

At least, that's what various US media outlets and commenters are saying about the new project. For all it's worth, the company who designed “The Cloud,” MVRDV claims they never even imagined someone would think of the NYC Towers when they saw their latest creation.

Assaulted by negative comments from all sides, included on their official webpage, MVRDV are attempting some damage control by issuing a statement to say they meant no offense because they never intended one set of towers to copy another.

“MVRDV regrets deeply any connotations The Cloud projects evoke regarding 9/11,” the company says in a statement cited by the aforementioned publication.

“It was not our intention to create an image resembling the attacks nor did we see the resemblance during the design process. We sincerely apologize to anyone whose feelings we have hurt,” the statement further reads.

According to the company, “[The Cloud] was designed based on parameters such as sunlight, outside spaces, living quality for inhabitants and the city,” and not with the purpose to mirror such a tragic event as the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Angry voices online, though, are saying pictures are more convincing than words: and they seem to deny what MVRDV is saying.

Give me a break! This is a replica of 9/11 and it's not too hard to figure it out. It's a lie to say "there was no intention to hurt anyone".

IF IT WALKS--TALKS--AND SOUNDS LIKE A DUCK THEN IT IS---THEY NEED TO CHANGE THE DESIGN. MOVE THE EXTRA FLOORS DOWN CLOSER TO THE GROUND AND RENAME IT ---JUST ABOVE THE HORIZON OR SOMEHTING LIKE THAT

This is irresponsible design. If you do not posses a sense of imagination you should not design ANYTHING, much less a structure that resembles the WTC which caused the deaths of so many civilians.
It is beyond sadness and lament that I publish this post. I simply cannot conceive how DARE they design and go through with this project. SO many alterations could have been done to prevent this resemblance- it is shameful, embarrassing and disrespectful that they have given this project a “green light”. Shame on all of you and your reputation for building such a mockery.

As Hook said in the movie, "Bad Form" is what came to mind when I saw the elevation of the proposed building(s). The architects should be ashamed of themselves!

You guys need to get over the fact that not everyone in the world is american. Notice that a DUTCH firm designed the building! To say that the building is inspired by the world trade center is unbelievably ignorant and self-centered. And why should we have the right to prevent a building being built in SOUTH KOREA because it resembles the world trade center, in AMERICA??? Do you think we would cancel the construction of a new building in the opposite situation? NO!

I'm sick of people generalizing about America. It's not being self centered when people antagonize this country ALL THE TIME. The U.S wouldn't THINK to do something so disrespectful and ignorant as to create a building that resemble a massacre. So, we don't have to imagine a role reversal here. Stop playing devils advocate you sound like an imbecile.

Frankly I think that people are making a much bigger deal out of this then it needs to be...
Asian architecture is very unique in itself an optical illusion of sorts and I think someone saw this picture stared at it long enough and was finally like "Hey, that kinda sorta looks like the Twin towers!" then got mad! I personally do not think it looks all that much like it. It is just an optical illusion that someone blew way out of porportion.

I believe that if they presented is as a form of a memorial to September 11th then the American public would have been more accepting of the design. Denying the fact that it looks like the twin towers makes everyone feel uneasy.
