Series creator Ed Boon "would love" to see it happening, but believes it highly unlikely

The chances for a Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter crossover game popping up in the near future were pretty slim, one of the long-standing fighting game series' creators, Ed Boon, revealed at Gamescom 2014.

The reveal was made during an interview with IGN, where Ed Boon teased fans of the series that a certain kind of "ality" will make its way back to the game, but the designer refused to reveal which one. The most likely candidates are the Brutality, a series of combo moves that resulted in the opponent exploding, and the Animality, where characters would turn into beasts that would then devour their opponents.

Boon also mentioned that no Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter game was likely to come out anytime in the near future.

"There currently isn't a Mortal Kombat versus project in the works. There's a nostalgia side of me that would love to see a Mortal Kombat vs. Street Fighter, if we were allowed to make an M-rated game. There's a novelty to that. But the chances of that happening are pretty low. It is a possibility but not a probability," Boon said.

The Mortal Kombat series is a much more violent one than either Street Fighter or Tekken, and it is highly unlikely that any of those series' IP holders would allow them to cross the line into M territory.

Mortal Kombat X is scheduled to come out sometime in 2015, headed for the PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 platforms, and Boon said that developer NetherRealm Studios intended to announce a release date in the coming weeks.
