Coldplay have reached really fast the top of British musical hierarchy. In February, "Speed of Sound" got the Best Single award at the Brit Awards ceremony. Right now, the song is again nominated for the most performed work and international hit of the year at the Ivor Novello music awards. And this is not all!
Another nomination adds to the aforementioned - "Fix You" runs for the best song against "Suddenly I See" by KT Tunstall and "I Bet You Look Good on The Dancefloor" by Sheffield rockers Arctic Monkeys. So it seems that the British music scene is dominated by rock music this year, with all the genres rock includes.
Some other artists expecting to get the award for best contemporary songs are The Gorillaz, Kaiser Chiefs, Athlete, while Robbie Williams and Natalie Imbruglia are also on the shortlist.
James Blunt, well known these days for romances like "You're Beautiful" and "Goodbye My Lover" has also been highly featured after being nominated for best songwriter and composer. The Kosovo soldier might so become the British composer of the year.
The Ivor Novello awards are conferred by the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters and, even though not as well known as, say, MTV Awards, they mean a whole lot for the artists of the Island. David Ferguson, head of the Academy, said this year's ceremony, due on May 25th, is an intent to honor and reward people who actually make music, being implicitly a protest against the habit of stealing music from the ones that compose it.
