Microsoft keeps everything secret when it comes to Surface sales, but a report by IDC rolled out this morning comes to put things straight in this saga.

IDC claims that Microsoft has delivered a total of 900,000 Surface units in the first quarter of 2013, most of which are Pros, while Apple, the number one brand in the tablet industry, sold approximately 19.5 million iPads.

The only good thing in this story is the fact that Microsoft has managed to sell almost as many tablets as all its partners that have already embraced Windows 8 and Windows RT, as total sales reach 1.8 million, according to the same report.

This could after all be an indication that Microsoft’s Surface is more or less an appealing product, so launching a second-generation with several major improvements pretty much makes sense.

What’s more, rumor has it that the tech giant is also preparing a smaller tablet, most likely with an 8-inch screen, which could run Windows 8.1 and might hit the shelves later this year.
