With a face like that, it's no wonder that the blobfish prefers to live in the deep ocean rather than hang out with panda bears, tiger cubs or other adorable animals.

Still, there is one thing this creature can now take pride in. Apparently, it has recently become the official mascot of a UK-based conservation group dubbed Ugly Animal Preservation Society.

According to Live Science, it became the mascot for this green group after ordinary folks voted for it to be crowned the world's ugliest animal. Ouch.

But hey, at least he's won himself a title, and I'm pretty sure many are now quite jealous of it.

The same source tells us that said conservation group focuses on raising awareness of plant and animal species that risk becoming extinct in the not-so-distant future and which fail to get lot of media attention because they are a tad “challenged” as far as beauty goes.

“We've needed an ugly face for endangered animals for a long time and I've been amazed by the public's reaction.”

“For too long the cute and fluffy animals have taken the limelight but now the blobfish will be a voice for the mingers who always get forgotten,” said Simon Watt, the president of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society.

Wildlife researchers explain that the blobfish inhabits the coasts of Australia and Tasmania. It lives at depths of about 1,900 to 3,900 feet (600 to 1,200 meters) and mostly feeds on crabs and lobsters.

The species is currently threatened by overfishing and the destruction of its natural habitats.
