History Chanel hit ratings gold with “The Bible” miniseries earlier this year so it comes as little surprise that NBC is trying to replicate that success by picking up the rights to a sequel to it.

CNN confirms that the network has already hired producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, who delivered “The Bible” to History Channel, for a sequel now with the working title “A.D.: Beyond the Bible.”

Further details on the project are not known at this point, but the same media outlet reports that the new miniseries will premiere on the network producing it.

“‘A.D.: Beyond the Bible’ (a working title) starts ‘in the dark days after Jesus’ betrayal and death. A perfect storm brews in the Holy Land, fueled by social injustice, Roman military oppression and religious unrest,” a statement from the network says.

“And in the face of terrible odds and brutal persecution, the small band of Jesus’ disciples stand against the combined might of Rome and their own local authorities. In a generation of rebellion, war, famine, and carnage, who can they trust?” it further says.

Burnett, who is a deeply religious man and has often spoken about the thrill of doing “The Bible,” also says that he’s excited to be working on a similar project so soon after this one.
