A major new version of Evernote is now available for download featuring a truckload of improvements, including a major redesign that takes cues from Yosemite. Sync is more than three times faster now, and there’s an all-new chat function inside.

The software company ceremoniously announces the update stating, “At Evernote, we believe that speed and stability are essential for productivity. That’s why we’ve completely rewritten Evernote for Mac. Evernote is significantly faster, more reliable and consumes less energy than ever before. We’ve also added a number of new features!”

What’s new in Evernote 6.0

The first thing you’ll notice when you install Evernote 6 is the fresh look of the application. It uses translucency and has a minimalistic design, much like OS X Yosemite itself.

Users who employ tables on a regular basis will be glad to hear that these can be resized now. Tables also now have configurable background colors and border styles. You can resize images right in the note editor, and search results are now displayed by relevance.

The notebook selector at the top of the note will make for a faster way to access recently used notebooks and the checkboxes in the note editor are easier to click. The app will now stay logged in by default, and notes will be indexed by OS X’ glorious Spotlight.

An awesome new chat function is included that strangely doesn’t get much attention in the changelog. The feature is massive! It’s basically a built-in IM client that lets you collaborate with other Evernote users and chat in real time.

“Send messages to share notes and discuss things you’re working on without leaving Evernote,” reads the changelog.

Speed and stability, new Premium feature

Sync is more than three times faster and launch and quit times have been reduced. There are some new keyboard shortcuts and the app now draws less power, always good news for laptop users.

More than 500 bugs have been addressed, and there’s a new crash reporting system that promises to make it easier to supply your feedback.

Context is the new Premium feature mentioned in the subtitle. It displays notes, articles, and people related to what you’re working on, and it allows you to access related articles from prominent news sources and related people from LinkedIn. Finally, Evernote 6 includes a much improved Presentation Mode.

To download Evernote 6.0 you will need an Intel-based Mac running OS X 10.7.5 or later and a 64-bit processor.
