A new list with some of the best apps to edit, organize, and share your photos

Aperture is about to go away, but have no fear! The Mac App Store has plenty of apps to help you with your photos. Combine that with the great Retina display of a MacBook Pro and you have a photo lab to go.

The new selection in the Mac App Store is simply called "Apps for Photographers" and the apps are some of the best for that kind of job. The App Store staff has created three different categories that are suited for both beginners and amateur photographers and also aimed at the most advanced professionals in that field.

The first category is Organize and Share, followed by Digital Darkroom, and there is also one called Cool Creations, with a total of 39 different apps.

First one up is the classic Apple's own iPhoto, the App that is about to disappear in just a few months. The tech giant is getting ready to combine iPhoto, Aperture, and some other features from Preview in the brand new Photos app. The details are pretty slim at this moment, but we know for sure that iPhoto users will be able to export most of the stuff in that app and work with Photos on OS X Yosemite.

iPhoto 9 is still $14.99 (€11.20) and we strongly advise against buying it. However, if it comes with your new Mac, you might as well use it to organize your photos. For the pros out there, Aperture used to be the gold standard. Nowadays, everyone moves towards Adobe Lightroom. Again, we believe you should wait until OS X Yosemite comes out to see what the new Photo management app will bring.

If you are an Instagrammer, then you have to try Carousel. This little app is the most beautiful way to explore Instagram on your Mac. Not only can you view your feed and the popular photos, but you can also comment, save photos, and interact with your followers.

For more advanced stuff, check out the apps in the Digital Darkroom category. The most appreciated one is Pixelmator. This software has evolved into a full-fledged Photoshop replacement, complete with powerful tools to edit your photos. Paying the $29.99 (€22.41) will get you an app that will help you create non-destructive layer styles, a new set of liquify tools, painting, retouching and drawing tools, and an app that will work with the most important formats from PSD, TIFF to JPEG and PNG.

Another great image editor is Acorn 4 and you can always try Intensify.

If you are in for the amateur fun, the last category is ready for you. Try them all, from the free Composure app to the $99.99 (€74.71) FotoMagico 4.

To check out all the apps in this selection go to the Mac App Store and hit the Apps for Photographers icon in the middle of the home page.
