A pole to which more than 220,000 people participated from all over the United Kingdom, and which was done for the 50th anniversary of the official British album chart, the world's favorite foursome came first. 'Sgt Pepper' was voted as the favorite number one album in the country.
The Beatles managed to surpass one of the biggest selling albums in the history of music, Michael Jackson's 'Thriller', by a difference of only 210 votes, a spokesperson from BBC Radio 2 said. The next three positions were occupied by U2 ('Joshua Tree'), Fleetwood Mac ('Rumors') and Pink Floyd ('Wish You Were Here').
The results of the pole were of no surprise to many people. 'It is a very impressive list and no surprise at all that "Sgt Pepper" is at the top. It revolutionized music and what we expect from an album. A fine choice indeed', presenter Simon Mayo said. He also added that the big surprise was that all voters chose the classical and so-called 'old' albums, while the works of many contemporary singers (or self-titled 'singers') were deemed unworthy to even be taken into consideration.
