Every once in a while, a horror movie comes out promising to be more than generic, boring, clichéd fare. “The Barrens” seems to be one of those films, as the first trailer for it suggests.

Coming from director Darren Lynn Bousman, who made an impact in the genre with several installments in the “Saw” franchise, as the trailer is quick to point out, the film looks more like a psychological thriller than a common horror flick.

Or perhaps we're wrong, who can say.

“It’s known as the Jersey Devil, the winged beast spawned 400 years ago by Satan himself. Some say this creature still inhabits the dense forests of southern New Jersey, where Richard (Moyer) takes his family for a camping trip,” reads the synopsis of the pic.

“As they venture further into the woods in search of a campsite, Richard teeters on the edge of sanity. And it seems that the blood-crazed demon called the Jersey Devil may no longer be a myth,” adds the same.

“The Barrens” will open in select theaters at the end of September and then in more territories. It stars Stephen Moyer, Mia Kirshner, Allie MacDonald, Peter DaCunha and Erik Knudsen.
