Not that this should come as much of a surprise since both “Thor” and “Captain America: The First Avenger” were in 3D, but the upcoming “The Avengers” from Marvel will also see a 3D release, director Joss Whedon confirms.

In a recent interview with JoBlo, Whedon says that “The Avengers” will be released in 3D but it was shot with traditional cameras.

In other words, it will be converted in post-production, which could be sad news for fans if they think of “Thor” (which had rather disappointing effects), but good news if they look back at “Captain America” (which was pretty cool, actually).

It's not that Whedon is against shooting in 3D: he just sees the extra equipment on set as an encumberment, which is why he chose to have “The Avengers” done in the traditional way.

“I’m not a big fan of extreme long lens, talky movies – I like to see the space I’m in and relate to it, so 3D kinda fits my aesthetic anyway. And the technology has advanced so far in the past couple years,” he says of having the film post-converted to 3D.

Moreover, Whedon wants fans to know that, while many 3D films have a bad rap for sucking all the fun out of the technique, “The Avengers” will not be “obnoxious” in that way.

“There’s no, ‘Oh look, we’re going to spend 20 minutes going through this tunnel because it’s in 3D!’ And no one is pointing at the screen the entire time. But it’s an action movie. Things tend to hurtle toward the screen anyway,” he explains.

If “Captain America: The Next Avenger” was any indication of the 3D effects Marvel is going for for the franchise, then it's safe to say “The Avengers” will be just the right amount of 3D plus good action and good storytelling.

“The Avengers” is out on May 4, 2012.
