14 DAY TRIAL // It must come as no surprise, but Marvel and Disney will soon start working on a sequel to “The Avengers,” as a studio executive has officially confirmed for Deadline.
The film, which reunites some of the most popular superheroes from the Marvel universe, premiered in the US and many other territories on May 4, and posted incredible numbers in just a matter of days, as we also informed you the other day.
As such, a sequel was a given even if neither Disney nor Marvel had said anything about it yet.
Now, Deadline has word from distributor Disney that “Avengers 2” will be made but, for the time being, no other details are available.
“This won’t come as a surprise to anyone who sat through the credits of The Avengers, or who simply looked at the film’s record-breaking box office sales this past weekend. Still, fans (and investors) will be glad to hear that Disney CEO Bob Iger just announced that the company is developing a sequel,” the movie-oriented e-zine writes.
“The film’s success 'is a great illustration of why we like Marvel so much.' Demand for Avengers merchandise has been strong, he added,” Deadline further says.
Over the weekend, “The Avengers” became the biggest opening in the US, with a gross of $200.3 million (€153.6 million) in ticket sales.
At the time it arrived in North American theaters, it had already been playing in theaters in select territories, which brought its international gross over a 12-day period to over $640 million (€490.9 million).
If those aren't numbers that call for a sequel, we don't know what is.
Industry people estimate that “The Avengers” will cross the $1 billion (€767 million) threshold in almost no time and most likely break more records.
For the time being, these are all the details available on the sequel. A possible release date has not been made public yet but, considering the first film just opened, don't hold your breath for an announcement.
