Focused on launch day

Mozilla is attempting to build nothing short of an altar for Firefox 3.0. And the fact of the matter is that the latest iteration of the open source browser deserved nothing less, as it skyrocketed to a record 8 million downloads just in the first 24 hours of availability. In this context, Mozilla is yet again turning to the open source community for help with a new project, designed to gather image and video, but also additional content focused on June 17, 2008, the launch of Firefox 3.0. A new archive is available on SpreadFirefox, and is set up to share with the world the event that was the release of Firefox 3.0.

"The launch of Firefox was amazing with events around the world: download day fests, launch parties, and more! We would like to collect your pictures, videos, and stories from the launch to share them with everyone. To do this, we have created a new group on spreadfirefox: Firefox 3 launch archive where you can post links to your memories of the launch," stated Alix F, product marketing manager at Mozilla.

But Mozilla is not interested exclusively in images and video. Those who participated in the Firefox 3.0 release can also share their stories, blog posts and even websites. And last, but not least, Mozilla is also turning to Flickr members who have uploaded photos with a Firefox 3.0 launch related event. "If you posted your pictures to Flickr and would like to share them, please tag them as ff3launch so we can easily find them," Alix added.

Mozilla is currently building Firefox 3.0.2, the second stability and security update for version 3.0. According to the current plans, Firefox 3.0.2 is the candidate to kill off v2.0, as it will be released as a major update to all Firefox users. Security and stability updates for Firefox 2.0 will be discontinued in mid-December 2008 according to Mozilla's current schedule. Version 3.0 will be superseded by Firefox 3.1 which is heading for Alpha 2 release, and final availability by the end of this year, or in early 2009.
