Boomboxes have always been an item with a special place in the urban culture, be it hip-hop or even rock; large boxes loaded with big, powerful speakers to push through the noise of the streets and spread the thumping beats out, boomboxes have lived through a period of decline during the 90s, but it certainly looks like someone is thinking about them again. The main idea behind boomboxes was portable powerful sound and back then they were one of the best solutions available; now this problem is being addressed by other means, some of them really comfortable and affordable – yet it seems that a boombox comes with a special attraction to it.
Designer William Kang brings forth an extremely nifty concept in the body of the 9999 Boom Box. Yes, the name is quite uncommon and even a bit Sci-Fi (remember the predilection for numbers like 2000 and those ending in 99?) but nevertheless everything looks very cool.
The 9999 Boom Box from William Kang should come with an MP3 player and a built-in video player; and the big integrated screen should be more than inspiring when a video of your fav artist is playing. The project design shows off a massive driver-array meant to deliver a rock-solid audio performance, with enough punch and aired clarity to compete with any home-oriented piece of audio gear.
Such a boombox could easily carry its own rechargeable battery while at the same time be able to get the necessary electricity from a wall outlet or even from the lighter plug of a car. At the same time, green energy sources, like solar panels, could be easily implemented in the 9999 Boom Box. There is nothing about iPods or iPod docks in the sketches William Kang has released: could this be a sign that the future of audio isn't necessarily connected to the ubiquitous Apple players?
On the other hand, media card support and even WiFi abilities could be integrated in a device like the 9999 Boom Box, ensuring the best interaction with the Internet-based content. Such a feature-array along with the very cool exterior design could be a very successful combination should anyone ever decide to turn the 9999 Boom Box into reality. Would somebody please make this one real? Please!
