Although they've represented quite an impressive development when they first appeared, scanners have become quite ordinary devices, found in most offices and homes. However, a next generation of such devices has recently been developed, namely 3D scanners, and one of the most interesting and affordable devices of this type is the Desktop 3D Scanner offered by the NextEngine company.
As the name says it, this scanner is actually able of generating 3D images of the object placed in front of it, due to the highly innovative technology developed by NextEngine, the MultiStripe Laser Triangulation system. The device includes
an AutoPositioner (a high precision rotary servo positioner controlled by the scanner), which is used for capturing multiple surfaces of objects, as well as a PartGripper, a system for securing the object being scanned.
Here are some other features of this extraordinary device:
- dimensions: 22.35 cm x 9.14 cm;
- laser source: twin arrays of four Class IIIA, 10 mW solid state lasers;
- photo lighting: built-in spatially diverse whitelight texture illuminators with tri-phosphor wide color gamut;
- field size: 13 cm x 10 cm (macro mode); 34.3 cm x 25.65 cm (wide mode);
- resolution: point density on target surface - 400 DPI in macro mode;
- 150 DPI in wide mode;
- acquisition speed: 50,000 processed points per second throughput;
- no special lighting required;
- compatible out of the box with SolidWorks software;
- PC interface: USB 2.0.
This device is really something interesting, especially considering the fact that its price is 2495 US dollars, quite small for what the Desktop 3D Scanner has to offer.
