It's only been a few days since the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil came to an end. However, preparations are already being made for the next competition of this kind, the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Under any other circumstances, this piece of news would only spark the interest of people who are extremely passionate about sports, and especially football. Still, it looks like greenheads too might want to know more about the next World Cup.

This is because, according to recent news on the topic, the international football championship scheduled to take place in Russia four years from now has high chances to be the most eco-friendly World Cup thus far organized.

Business Green tells us that, earlier this week, it has been revealed that, of the new stadiums that are to be built in Russia especially for the 2018 FIFA event, six are to be evaluated under a green building code dubbed BREEAM.

For those unaware, BREEAM stands for Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology, and represents the world's foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings.

Information shared with the public says that, in order to comply with BREEAM standards, the six stadiums will all have to be fitted with automated lighting controls that will help reduce electricity consumption and thus cut energy bills.

The folks in charge of designing and building these stadiums expect that, thanks to these automated lighting controls and to similar technologies that promote energy efficiency, the structures will burn 40% less power than other buildings of a similar size.

The technologies and features that specialists expect will help the stadiums consume as little energy as possible while keeping people entertained include highly efficient ventilation systems, heat recovery, and state-of-the-art building materials.

Apart from impressive energy efficiency, the stadiums will encourage people to properly dispose of the waste produced during the World Cup and support recycling efforts, and will be equipped with water saving fixtures and valves for toilets.

“The World Cup 2018 stadiums, designed to BREEAM standards, will raise the bar of sustainable design and construction in Russia,” BREEAM advisor Ksenia Agapova comments on these efforts to make the 2018 World Cup in Russia the greenest ever.

Furthermore, “Regulations in green building are not well developed here and few incentives exist for implementation of green technologies. We are looking forward to successful completion of these projects and expected increased public awareness of green building, as these venues attract a lot of attention.”
