Finally, we will be able to use an HDD with a storage capacity of no less than 160GB or we will be able to choose a not so powerful one that comes at a 'mere' 80GB. Both hard disks have been developed by Fujitsu and are part of the 2.5" MHW2 BH HDD (hard disk drive) series.
The new line-up, that is made up from a 160GB MHW2160BH and an 80GB MHW2080BH is meant for mobile workstations and, because it incorporates an advanced perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology, the hard disks are able to provide a higher storage capacity. In addition to achieving 160GB of storage capacity through PMR technology, the new MHW2 BH series also features one of the highest levels of shock resistance and energy efficiency.
More precisely, the PMR is the technology that is able to support next-generation high-capacity hard disk drives, as magnetic charges are aligned perpendicularly on the media surface.
"In addition to the MHW2 BH series, Fujitsu will simultaneously introduce the MHW2 AT series aimed at the consumer electronics market. Primarily intended for AV and information appliances, markets that are expected to expand rapidly, this series features low-power consumption and a best-in-class acoustic noise level of 1.5 bels when idle. The series incorporate traditional longitudinal recording technology," it is said in the press release.
According to recent studies made by Techno Systems Research, Fujitsu is ranked third on the 2.5" HDD for mobile PCs specialized segment, with 21% of the worldwide market share. Moreover, the company has shipped a total of 6 million units since commencing sales in 2004.
