The Cupertino-based company announced yesterday the launch of this year's Apple Design Awards. This is the event's 12th edition and the winners will be announced at this year's World Wide Developers Conference set for June, in San Francisco.

Apple's design awards "recognize technical excellence and outstanding achievement in Mac OS X software design and development." This year, developers can submit their developed software under seven categories, one category less than in 2006.

The Best Automator Workflow category was removed, the remaining categories being:

Best Mac OS X Leopard Application Best Mac OS X User Experience Best Mac OS X Developer Tool Best Mac OS X Game Best Mac OS X Scientific Computing Solution Best Mac OS X Dashboard Widget Best Student Application

Though Leopard isn't out yet, developers have already announced Leopard applications. I hope Leopard will be out before they announce this year's winners. The deadline for submissions is Monday, April 23, 2007, at 5 PM PT. Submitters that hope to "earn the respect and admiration of [their] peers from around the globe" must have an active Apple Developer Connection membership.

These are last year's Apple Design Awards winners: TextMate 1.5.2 - best Developer Tool; modo 201 - best use of graphics; iClip lite 2.0 - best Dashboard Widget; Build Real Estate Catalog/Ultimate Productivity Action Pack 1.0 - best Automator Workflow; iSale 3.1 - best user experience; The Sims 2 1.0 Rev E - best game; EnzymeX 3.1 - best scientific computing solution; Lineform 1.1 - best student product.

If you have an opinion about which apps could be this year's favorites on the seven categories Apple listed, feel free to leave your comment below.
