Thailand's main opposition party said it has evidence that the ruling party has committed electoral fraud and is planning on boycotting the general election on April 2. They accuse the current government of being involved in a plan to hire people as candidates for small opposition parties in the upcoming polls.

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra demanded an election in order to calm
down the flaming protests against his leadership. He was given by the opposition 24 hours to take action against the alleged electoral fraud. Tens of thousands of protesters gathered around Government House for nearly a week, accusing the Thai Prime Minister of corruption and abuse of power and demand for his resignation.

"This wrongdoing has seriously damaged the democratic system. I would like to call on Prime Minister Thaksin to settle this problem," said Suthep Thueksuban, secretary general of the opposition Democrat Party, on Sunday.

Thaksin characterized the charges as being "nonsense" and told the press while campaigning in Bangkok that neither he, nor his party has done anything wrong.

According to the Democrats, Thaksin's Thai Rak Thai Party hired people to run as phony candidates from small opposition parties paying each of them $2,500 to $77,500.

This fact was aimed at going around the laws, which stipulated a candidate must win 20% of the vote to get elected if he is unchallenged. It might be complicated to achieve these results considering that in some parts of the country the ruling party is not that popular.
