TextExpander, a Mac OS X utility that lets users define abbreviations for frequently-used text and images, has recently been updated to version 2.3. SmileOnMyMac has decided to add a useful feature that predefines snippet groups of accented foreign words commonly used in English. The update also expands to fit wider System Preferences window on Leopard.

As SmileOnMyMac puts it, TextExpander "listens to what you type and inserts user-defined snippets on the fly whenever you enter their corresponding abbreviations." Supporting dates, times, plain text, formatted text, cursor positioning, images and more, the utility software also helps you save countless hours on things you would otherwise type repeatedly.

Other features let you insert standard greetings and signatures, including formatted text and pictures, organize snippets into groups, add snippet groups from external files and online sources, and even add common typos to your snippet library - TextExpander will automatically correct them for you.

Using TextExpander, you will be able to correct your most frequent typos automatically and type special characters without having to launch a special characters palette. Also, you will be organizing snippets into groups, inserting the current date and time in any format you prefer, and syncing snippets via MobileMe. Programmers will find the software come in very handy, as they can make editor-independent code templates and invoke AppleScripts for their code strings.

The full list of 2.3 enhancements, according to SmileOnMyMac:

- Added "Accented Words" snippet group;

- Expands to fit wider System Preferences window on Leopard;

- Fixed filtering of abbreviations and snippets;

- Fixed some case-sensitivity problems on Tiger;

- Other minor fixes and improvements.

TextExpander costs 29.95 $ to buy. The free version is a fully-operational 30-day trial of the software. SmileOnMyMac assures users that the demo version is identical to the purchased one - after 30 days, the developer reminds you to buy and register your copy.
