The filibuster staged by Democrat Senator Wendy Davis in a bid to stop the approval of a piece of legislation dubbed the most restrictive abortion bill in the country has proven successful.

This morning, the Statesman wrote that the bill was dead as the time to pass it had gone by. The news was announced by Lieutenant Governor of Texas, David Henry Dewhurst at 3:01 a.m.

“Members, the constitutional time for the first called session for the 83rd Legislature has expired. Senate Bill 5 cannot be signed in the presence of the Senate at this time and therefore cannot be enrolled. It’s been fun, but, uh, see you soon,” he said.

According to HuffPost, the 13-hour speaking session could have been interrupted if Davis set down or laid her hands on the desk in front of her.

Her efforts were supported on Twitter under hashtag #StandWithWendy, and she has received a supportive tweet by President Obama himself nine hours into the proceedings.
