Tetris, one of the most popular games out there, is turning 30 this year, and a new flavor of Tetris Blitz is now available for download for the owners of Nokia Lumia devices, in celebration of the game’s anniversary.

Tetris was launched by Russian scientist, Alexey Pajitnov, in 1984 in Moscow, and it managed to gain a lot of traction among users very fast.

Within a few years, the game was already available in North America and Japan, after conquering Eastern Europe, with millions of people already playing it.

Three decades later, Tetris is still a highly appreciated game, especially on mobile devices, as it is easy to play and can be carried around at all times, effortlessly.

The latest flavor of the mobile game, Tetris Blitz, was designed with the same addictive gameplay that the title has always included, but in a glossier format, so as to provide games with a better experience on their devices.

“The aim of the game – for those living under a rock for the past three decades – is to rearrange falling blocks, called Tetriminos, in the stack below by rotating them into place,” a recent post on Nokia Conversations explains.

When these blocks are arranged correctly with no gaps between them, entire rows will be wiped out, and users will receive points for that.

The new update for the mobile game arrives on devices with a retro-themed tournament feature (the option has been there right from the start, but it has a new look now).

“The iconic background music (we bet you’re humming it now) from the 80s is back, the power-ups now have a retro finish to them, and new anniversary avatars have been added,” the aforementioned blog post explains.

New Anniversary avatars have also been included in the update, it seems. On top of that, the game has got a glorious birthday cake finisher, so there’s one more reason to grab it and start playing.

Enthusiasts will certainly be happy to learn that the game is set to receive new retro tournaments throughout the year, “to help keep the nostalgia levels high,” as Microsoft notes in the said blog post.

The mobile title comes with a series of other features as well, including an elusive Frenzy mode, which allows users to experience explosive effects and earn double points.

Moreover, the Tetris Blitz comes with Xbox Live integration, thus allowing gamers to compete in the Xbox Live leaderboards and earn Xbox Live achievements. And with tournaments being reset every week, there’s always a new chance to win.

You can download Tetris Blitz for Windows Phone from the official Windows Phone Store.
