How long would it take to crack your password on a home computer?

Kaspersky has launched an interesting web tool that tells you how long it would take hackers to brute force your password on an average home computer.

What’s interesting about the free tool is that it highlights the weak points in your passphrase. For instance, users are warned about repeated characters, keyboard sequences and widely utilized combinations, even if the password is strong.

Secure Password Check also compares the time needed to crack the password to various tasks. For example, the password can be cracked while you make a 1 kilometer walk, or while you go on a long travel in your new Ferrari.

The tool is meant for educational purposes. The tested passwords are not stored by Kaspersky.

While the tool is useful, there’s one aspect that’s not so good. I couldn’t test my real password because it’s displayed in clear text (instead of dots) when you enter it.

In an office environment or in a public place, you’re basically handing over your password to anyone that walks by.

So how long would it take hackers to crack your password?

Update. It turns out the password can be hidden from shoulder surfers by clicking the asterisk button from the right side of the password field.
