In case you needed even more proof that the Spice Girls are milking their much-hyped reunion tour for all it's worth, here's one more argument to go in the "overrated" column. Tesco has joined the top names to have jumped in the Spicy bandwagon (along with Victoria's Secret for instance). The giant British retailer has decided to pay the girls a staggering 5 million in order to feature them in Tesco's Christmas campaign.
This still image has just been released - and it's meant to give us all a taste of what Spicy Christmas Tesco has in store for its customers. However, I must say I expected at least something outrageously sexy, along the lines of seeing the five band mates wearing nothing but red and white fluffy bikinis and chasing Santa around a huge jar of spices. OK, maybe something a little more creative than that, but you get my point. Instead, we get to see the girls gathered around a table filled with expensive treats and Champaign, doing one of the things they do best: act as if they still get along wonderfully together.
"We are thrilled to be working with the Spice Girls for our Christmas campaign", said a spokesman for Tesco's. "We feel that the new commercials really emphasize Tesco's commitment to offer something different and exciting this Christmas". Different, exciting and expensive, he should have added. The fact is, for 1 million each they could have made them strip, go naked, do anything and everything. I mean, don't forget that Victoria and her hubby David were planning to join the Pussycat Dolls for a series of shows - for free. I think it's very funny that when they get paid to advertise, all the girls do is sit around a table and drink champagne. Anyone could do that.
What's more, it looks like not even 1 million can buy Victoria's loyalty, since Posh has repeatedly stated she's more a fan of the rival claim Marks and Spencer's. Just before the Beckhams' move to LA, she said: "You can get most things out there but what I will miss is M&S. I missed it when I first moved to Madrid and it is the first shop I go to when I'm back". I guess Tesco's will have to work harder to convince Victoria they're just as valuable. I have a feeling they might increase the amount of money they're paying her. What do you think?
