The open world 2D action adventure game Terraria, developed and published by Re-Logic, will be getting a Linux release and the developers are already working on it.

Terraria was initially released a few years ago and it was a highly successful game right from the start. Ignoring the console and focusing just on Steam, we find Terraria as one of the best-selling titles for the Windows platform, overtaking much bigger games like Portal 2 or The Witcher 2.

The developers are now finally looking to release a Linux version of this amazing game and they are actively working on it. It will take a while to finish both the Mac OS X and the Linux ports, but it's coming very soon.

Terraria in detail

Players might be inclined to think that this is just another open world game, but the truth is that it most likely sparked the genre by itself. Since 2011, there have been quite a few other titles that give the player complete freedom to do anything, like building a shelter, exploring the world, and trying to survive against whatever is happening around them.

The beauty of the game, besides the 2D graphics reminiscent of the SNES era, is the fact that everything is procedurally generated, making the experience of every player quite unique.

"Greetings Terrarians! As you know, we have been working diligently over the past 18 months to expand the World of Terraria - both in regards to the scope of the game itself as well as the platforms on which it can be played. It has been simply amazing to watch our community expand into Console and Mobile in parallel with our reinvigorated PC fans."   "That said, we are extremely pleased to share the two teaser screenshots below that we hope will finally address a long-desired addition to Terraria: availability for both Mac and Linux!" say the developers from Re-Logic on their blog.

From what they have said so far, it looks like the world and characters will be compatible between versions, players from all platforms should be able to play on the same servers, and the owners of the game on the Steam for Windows platform will get free copies for Linux and Mac.

Terraria will probably enter a public Beta stage pretty soon, as it usually happens with big releases. You can also check the official Steam entry for more details about his game.
