Warner Bros. announces that it plans to release Terminator Salvation – The Videogame, a title which will accompany the upcoming Terminator movie set to arrive in 2009.

The game, based on the Terminator Salvation movie and starring Christian Bale, is in production at the moment. The player will be able to take on the role of John Connor, the kid who was saved in the first three movies in order to become the biggest hero of humanity as its last remnants face the threat of Skynet, a supercomputer which decided that it needed to get rid of its human creators. The release will offer gamers a chance to fight all the enemies seen in the movies and television series and there will be special foes exclusive to the game. Some Terminators will fight alongside the player. The game will be played from a third person perspective. GRIN Studios, which have also worked on the re-imagining of Bionic Commando, will handle development, while Equity Games will be in charge of distribution.

John Quinn, who is the executive vice president of Worldwide Operations at Warner Bros., said that “Building on the incredibly strong franchise, Terminator Salvation – The Videogame will be a cinematic gaming experience that complements the upcoming film. Working with Halcyon and Equity Games, we will expand on the Terminator universe on next generation consoles with action packed gameplay and detailed environments”.

Usually tie ins aiming to link a videogame and a movie are not well received by the public. The production values are low and the games appear rushed and lacking depth. We'll see how the Terminator videogame shapes up as its release date nears, but the franchise can really offer the backbone for a successful videogaming experience.
