Activision highlights that its investment of both money and resources into Destiny developer Bungie shows the commitment it has to the new experience and the potential of the new title.

Destiny launched around the world yesterday onto the PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One platforms, finally delivering the long-awaited multiplayer-only first-person shooter experience from developer Bungie and publisher Activision.

A lot of time and money were spent on the game

Destiny's creation process has been going on for quite some time, according to Activision's Roy Stackhouse, the general manager for the publisher's UK and Ireland division, who has talked with CVG. During that time, the whopping sum of $500 million (€386 million) was confirmed as having been spent on the whole game, leading many to think that the title is the most expensive one in the industry's history.

According to Stackhouse, however, that sum, initially mentioned by Activision Blizzard boss Bobby Kotick, incorporates all the different expenses, not just the development of the game.

"Well, to put that $500m in context - which I'm assuming you're attributing to Bobby Kotick at the Millican Convention - that's the whole entirety of the game. That's development, manufacturing, marketing and so forth. It sounds like a big amount but it doesn't just fuel one aspect," he says.

The executive emphasizes that the money spent on Destiny shows just how much Activision cares about the experience and the things it's willing to do to ensure its success.

"I think it shows the confidence that we have in Destiny. It's what Activision does best; when we partner with a development studio that can deliver a game like Destiny, we can bring that to market. There's every indication that the launch will be something everyone will enjoy."

The ten-year plan is a pledge to players

Stackhouse also talks about the famous ten-year plan Bungie stated for Destiny, highlighting that it also shows a commitment from the studio in regards to the first-person shooter experience and how it's going to support it in all sorts of ways from now on.

"Well, the ten year plan's inception was about four to five years ago. Bungie had been working on Destiny for a long time and we've been working with them very closely since then. The key thing, though, is that when you have a game that we have in Destiny, when you're working with a development studio with the lineage of Bungie, you know you can deliver something to market that player want."

Both Bungie and Activision are now entering the post-launch support period for Destiny, and quite a lot of different expansions and add-ons have already been confirmed for the game.
