This is just a fraction of what you can do with Linux

The Linux platform is getting more and more exposure and new users all the time. Long gone are the days when people thought that Linux was only accessible to users with special skills. We have put together a small collection of desktops from the Linux community to show that, in fact, Linux is the now the king.

Both the Windows and Mac OS X platforms have their strong suits. Many Linux users will not agree with this statement but, in fact, Windows 8 did manage to set a flat trend for themes, and the Mac OS X desktop looks very nice indeed, especially the new Yosemite iteration.

Both have one fatal flaw. They can't be changed, at least not in any significant way. Their desktops can be customized to some extent, but they remain largely the same. It's also possible to assume that Windows and Mac OS users are just like everyone else and they get bored from time to time, but there is nothing that can be done about it. They are stuck with the desktop until a new version gets released and, most likely, it won't be radically different from what they were already using.

Instead, the Linux platform is about flexibility and change. If someone doesn't like what they’re using anymore, they can go about changing the desktop and everything related to it, like file managers, tools, and software, all with great ease.

It's no longer a difficult task to change your desktop environment. In fact, it's now common place to have more than one installed at the same time and users can switch between them. Ubuntu, for example, can feature numerous desktops like MATE, Cinnamon, KDE, and others. All of them can be activated from the log-in screen.

Linux users have also adopted, in great numbers, various dock applications and you can see them now in most of the distributions. Conckys are also quite interesting and it seems that many users are now adding them to their OSes.

There are thousands of themes, icon packs, and mouse cursors available for download, and a lot of them are of really high quality. You will notice one thing in particular in the screenshots below. Most users are now going towards a minimalistic approach and most of their desktops reflect this preference.

You will also see that people don't really like fancy features, like transparency, translucency, glossy surfaces, 3D objects, or any kind of embellishments. If these screenshots don't convince you to install Linux, nothing will.
