Today, Imangi Studios has announced that its Temple Run mobile game has been downloaded over one billion times on all platforms on which it is available.

The title was released back in August 2011 and has already landed on all major platforms out there, including Android, iOS and Windows Phone.

Temple Run is an endless runner title that popularized the genre and has already seen several sequels, many designed based on animated movies from Disney (Temple Run Brave and Temple Run Oz).

For those who have never had the chance to play the game, we should note that it requires for users to control a character that is constantly running toward the horizon.

This is done through a variety of gestures, including swipes (left, right, up and down), or tilts of the device. All this time, the character is chased by a horrific creature.

However, as Venture Beat notes, although it sports simple mechanics, Temple Run has managed to become highly addictive, and the multitude of similarly designed games that has emerged since its release proves that.

To this, we can add the one billion downloads that the game series has already registered, and which has translated into 50 trillion total meters run.

Imangi Studios has also unveiled that the game has gathered a total of 32 billion deaths so far, along with 140 billion “save me” options used.

Players have collected 147 trillion gold coins and have discovered 1 billion artifacts in the game so far, the company says. Overall, Temple Run has been played 216,018 total years.

“We decided we wanted to keep working on Temple Run and keep our fans engaged and keep doing more with that intellectual property and continue to build Temple Run into a franchise that’ll be around for the long term,” Keith Shepherd, cofounder of Imangi Studios, reportedly says.

Temple Run was the tenth game published by Imangi Studios and was created by only three people, namely Keith Shepherd, his wife Natalia Luckyanova, and freelance artist Kiril Tchangov. At the moment, the company remains small, with only 11 employees.

“We’re still grounded in the experience of wanting to be really creative and innovative and prototyping and messing around with what will ultimately become our next great product as well. It’s a cool time here at Imangi,” Shepherd adds.

Temple Run is available for download for free on all mobile platforms, though it is ad-supported. Users are also provided with the option to buy in-game content, and the system appears to have paid off great for the company so far.
